Federal judge strikes down parts of deportation rules used against noncitizen speakers
A federal judge in California ruled that parts of the government's deportation framework violated constitutional speech and due-process protections.
U.S. District Judge Noël Wise ruled in a case brought by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression on behalf of Stanford's student newspaper. The newspaper said international students had been reluctant to speak because they feared deportation.
Wise found First and Fifth Amendment problems in portions of the provisions used by the government, citing immigration actions against people who supported Palestinians, criticized Israel or criticized Charlie Kirk. The Justice Department did not respond to ABC's request for comment.
