GAO says Coast Guard housing oversight gaps leave some personnel struggling

The GAO reported that the Coast Guard and Defense Department lack a full picture of housing difficulties faced by some service members and families.

The Government Accountability Office said about 41% of Coast Guard units are in remote areas or places with heavy vacation-rental demand, where limited supply and costs can exceed housing allowances. It said 76% of Coast Guard personnel rely on private-sector housing.

The report said fuller implementation of earlier recommendations on data collection, feedback and housing-allowance monitoring would improve management of military housing.
