Hague arbitration court says India cannot unilaterally suspend Indus Waters Treaty
The Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that the Indus Waters Treaty remains binding, while India rejected the ruling and the tribunal's jurisdiction.
A five-member arbitration panel in The Hague unanimously ruled that India cannot unilaterally place the 1960 water-sharing treaty with Pakistan in abeyance and must continue observing its obligations.
Pakistan welcomed the decision. India, which did not participate in the proceedings, rejected the tribunal's jurisdiction and said its suspension of the treaty remains in force.
