Hurricane Karina forms in Pacific far from land as dangerous surf reaches Mexico

Karina became a Category 1 hurricane far southwest of Baja California, with forecasters warning of dangerous surf and rip currents along parts of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center said Karina strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph while remaining far from land. Forecasters expected further strengthening over open Pacific waters.

The storm was not forecast to approach land, but its swells were expected to produce dangerous surf and rip currents along parts of southwestern Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
