India rejects tribunal ruling that Indus Waters Treaty remains in force
India rejected a Hague-based arbitration tribunal's ruling that the Indus Waters Treaty remains binding, while Pakistan welcomed the decision.
India's foreign ministry said the tribunal was improperly constituted and had no authority over New Delhi's decisions. Pakistan said the ruling confirmed that neither country can unilaterally suspend the 1960 water-sharing treaty.
India placed the agreement in abeyance in April 2025. Analysts told Deutsche Welle that the tribunal lacks direct enforcement power and that India currently has limited infrastructure to substantially alter western-river flows.
