Investigation tracks more than 25,000 US deportations to third countries

A 24-outlet investigation tracked more than 25,000 people deported by the US to countries other than their own under agreements with foreign governments.

The investigation, coordinated by Forbidden Stories, verified more than 100 flights to 28 countries. It reported that roughly 20,000 people were sent by bus to Mexico and more than 5,000 were flown to countries in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Central Asia.

Internal records reviewed by the participating outlets showed the administration pledged at least $410 million for arrangements with 38 countries. The State Department said it would use lawful means to remove people without a right to remain in the United States.
