Iran appoints veteran hard-liners to senior security posts during war with US

Iran's supreme leader appointed veteran military and intelligence figures to senior posts as the war with the United States reached six months.

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei named former Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezaei as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and former intelligence chief Hossein Taeb to lead the Basij. Analysts cited by the Associated Press said the appointments emphasized internal cohesion and a tougher posture.

President Masoud Pezeshkian continues to call for a negotiated end to the war, while Rezaei has said a deal would require the United States to implement Iran's conditions. A June ceasefire collapsed after renewed strikes.
