Mastodon molar found in California preserve will undergo carbon dating
Paleontologists identified a fossil found in San Mateo County as a well-preserved adult Pacific mastodon molar, which Stanford researchers plan to carbon-date.
Geomorphologist Brigid Lynch found the fossil while working at a preserve in San Mateo County. Paleontologists identified it as an adult Pacific mastodon molar estimated to be about 10,000 years old.
The tooth has been donated to Stanford University, where researchers plan to use carbon dating to determine its age more precisely, according to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.
