Music publishers sue Anthropic over alleged piracy in Claude training

Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell and other publishers sued Anthropic, alleging it illegally obtained copyrighted works to train Claude.

The complaint, filed in federal court in Northern California, accuses Anthropic and co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann of obtaining copyrighted books containing lyrics and sheet music through scraping, downloading and torrents. The claims have not been adjudicated.

Anthropic disputed the publishers' allegations and said it would defend itself in court.
