NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launches from Florida
SpaceX launched NASA's $4.3 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Kennedy Space Center on Sunday for a mission studying planets, galaxies and cosmic expansion.
A Falcon Heavy rocket carried the telescope from Kennedy Space Center, and NASA said it separated successfully from the rocket's upper stage. The observatory is expected to take more than three months to reach a point about 1 million miles from Earth.
Roman will use a wide-field infrared camera to survey galaxies and search for planets, while its observations help researchers study dark matter and dark energy.
