Niger loyalists repel mutiny in Niamey with Russian military support
Niger's Defense Ministry and analysts said loyalist forces, aided by Russia's Africa Corps, repelled a daylong mutiny centered on Niamey's airport and presidential district.
Soldiers exchanged gunfire with forces loyal to Niger's junta from Friday night into Saturday after troops took fellow soldiers hostage at an air base, according to the Defense Ministry. Analysts said Russia's Africa Corps provided ground and air support to the loyalists.
Niamey was calm on Sunday, with military checkpoints in place. Authorities had not disclosed the mutineers' fate or any charges against them.
