NWEA data show US K-8 reading gap narrowed by one-third in past year

NWEA data show that students in kindergarten through eighth grade closed one-third of the reading gap with pre-pandemic achievement levels over the past year.

Reading performance improved across kindergarten through eighth grade during the past year, according to data from the education research group NWEA. The gains reduced the gap with pre-pandemic levels by one-third after several years of stagnation.

NWEA's data showed the largest improvements among Black and Hispanic students and students in high-poverty areas, but two-thirds of the gap with pre-pandemic performance remains.
