Oxford mathematician challenges optical-correction explanation for Parthenon’s curves
An Oxford mathematician found little support for the claim that the Parthenon’s curved features were designed to counter optical illusions.
University of Oxford mathematician Alain Goriely used mathematical modeling to test longstanding explanations for the Parthenon’s curved base and columns. His study found that the supposed visual distortions were unsupported or too small to explain the architectural features.
The research, published in Royal Society Open Science, suggests practical or aesthetic reasons may better explain the curves, while noting that the architects’ intentions remain uncertain.
