Researchers identify 25-kilometer ancient impact crater in Quebec
Researchers found field evidence that a 25-kilometer formation near Quebec’s Lake Marsal is an impact crater created about 390 million years ago.
A field team found shatter cones near Lake Marsal, evidence that the circular formation was produced by an impact rather than volcanic activity. Rock samples indicate the roughly 25-kilometer structure formed about 390 million years ago.
The team calls the site Uhackatik after consulting the Innu Council of Ekuanitshit. The researchers consider the identification effectively confirmed, while formal recognition by a Meteoritical Society committee remains pending.
