Study identifies seismic signals that could warn of volcano-triggered tsunamis
Researchers found that fast-moving seismic T-waves tracked the 2022 Hunga volcano collapse and could provide earlier warning of tsunamis from underwater eruptions.
Scientists analyzing distant seismic sensors reconstructed the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption and found strong T-wave signals when the underwater volcano's summit fractured and collapsed. That collapse generated the eruption's largest and most destructive tsunami.
Because the signals travel at least seven times faster than tsunami waves, the researchers said they could support earlier warnings after underwater eruptions.
