A Nature study used a large proteogenomic dataset from 29 healthy human tissues to examine protein variants produced by inherited differences, somatic mutations, and errors during protein production. The team identified 13,910 localized variants corresponding to 7,215 distinct amino-acid substitutions.
The researchers reported that both genetic and mistranslated variants tracked patterns associated with their abundance, and argued that non-genetic substitutions provide an additional route for protein diversity.
