U.S. rule reclassifies 10 causes of airline disruptions starting Oct. 19

A federal reporting rule will move 10 causes of flight delays and cancellations into a category outside airlines' control on Oct. 19.

The Transportation Department said the change implements the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 and is intended to distinguish disruptions airlines can control from those they cannot.

The department acknowledged that the reclassification could reduce the value of amenities and compensation airlines provide to affected travelers.
