USDA cyclospora projects face closures and relocation after funding cuts
Two USDA cyclospora research projects lost congressional funding, while a third is set to move from Maryland to Iowa, according to a Reuters report.
Two of three USDA research projects studying the foodborne parasite cyclospora are closing after Congress did not fund them for fiscal 2026, Reuters reported. A third funded project is scheduled to move from Maryland to Iowa, but its scientists have declined to relocate, according to the report.
The USDA said research would continue without disruption and that it was arranging an orderly transition. The CDC recorded more than 17,000 confirmed cyclosporiasis cases across 48 states and Washington, D.C., from May 1 through Aug. 24.
